Attacking

Face a monster next to you and press Ctrl or Space (on a phone, the big attack button). Hold the key to keep attacking. Bows and some other weapons attack from further away; see Combat in detail.

  • Passive monsters only fight back after you attack them.
  • Aggressive monsters attack you as soon as they notice you and chase you for a while.
  • When a monster dies you get its experience. If it drops an item, only you can pick it up for 30 seconds.

Hitting and missing

Not every swing lands: depending on your accuracy and the target's evade, between half and four in five of your attacks hit. Raise AGI for better accuracy (Priests, Magicians and Summoners get theirs from WIS).

Critical hits

Attacks from behind or the side, and the first hit on a target with full health, are critical hits that do 50 % more damage. Monsters get the same bonus when they hit you from behind or the side, so try not to turn your back on a fight.

Armour

Armour takes the bite out of weak hits: a hit much smaller than twice the target's armour does only a fraction of its damage. Strong hits go through almost fully. Keep your armour up to date as you level.

Staying alive

  • Watch your HP bar. Drink potions from your bag or hotbar: a small Health Potion restores 20 HP and costs 10 gold at the Aeven Grocery.
  • Your HP and TP refill slowly by themselves.
  • Never sit down next to monsters: a sitting player is hit by every attack.
  • Priests and Magicians can learn healing spells; see Spells & skills.
  • A Cat pet heals you when your HP gets low; see Cat.

If you are defeated

You lose no items, gold or experience. You reappear at your home point: new characters (level 0) in the Starting house, later on the farmland outside Aeven, or in the town where you became a citizen. See Death & respawning.
