Riding in Alduin

A mount carries you around Alduin a little faster than walking (about 12 % at first, up to 15 % when it is fully trained). You own your mounts for good: they wait at the stable when you log out, and you can have several but ride one at a time. Mounts are not pets: your pet keeps following you while you ride.

Ride up Stable Lane from the north-east edge of Aeven to reach the Aeven Stables.

The Aeven Stables

  • Stablemaster Wren teaches riding. Her first lesson, Saddle Up, gives you a Brown Horse for free. After that she has a short daily riding lesson that trains your mount.
  • Bram the Stable Hand runs the stable's shop: mounts, blankets, ribbons and coats.
  • Race Marshal Pip stands at the gate of the Meadow Run race course.
  • In the paddock next to the yard you can see all five mounts. Click one to look at it.
  • The training paddock in the south-east is a small practice loop with three flags.

Every mount has the same speed. Rarer mounts look different and have other abilities, but none of them is faster.

Riding

  • Open Mounts in the side menu (or press M) and press Summon & ride. Press M again, or Dismount, to get off.
  • Your mount trots up beside you and you swing into the saddle. Everyone around you sees you ride.
  • Press F (or the ability button on the riding bar) for your mount's ability. Gallop speeds you up for a few seconds. Howl, bloom and fire breath are just for show.
  • You can't fight from the saddle. Attacking, casting a spell or sitting down makes you get off first.
  • Mounts can't go into houses, shops, caves or dungeons. Ride in and you get off by yourself. If you fall in a fight, you come back on foot.
  • You always log in on foot.

Training and levels

Every mount starts at level 1 and can reach level 30. It learns by:

  • travelling: every new stretch of road you ride (walking up and down the same few tiles doesn't count),
  • exploring: riding onto a map for the first time,
  • lessons: Stablemaster Wren's lessons,
  • racing: every finish on the Meadow Run.
5Traveler's Saddle
10Golden Ribbons and the Proud Stance (your mount tosses its head while it waits)
15A second coat for your mount and its trail (sparkles, frost, leaves or embers)
20Knight's Saddle and the Azure Blanket
25Steel Barding
30Master Rider: the title, the Master's Saddle and the Master Rider's Banner

Training adds a little speed too: +1 % at levels 10, 20 and 30, never more than +15 %.

Dressing up your mount

In the Mounts window pick a mount, then choose its coat, saddle, blanket, barding, ribbons, banner, trail and stance. A locked piece shows how to unlock it. Some blankets, ribbons and coats are sold at the stable for gold or Alduin Coins; others come from races and achievements. Cosmetics never change speed.

The Meadow Run

A fenced loop around a wooded pond, north of the stable yard:

  1. Mount up, ride into the starting gate (between the green and checkered flags) and open Mounts › Races.
  2. Press Start. After the countdown, ride the loop and pass all seven checkpoints in order. The next one glows on the ground.
  3. Ride back through the gate to finish.

You get gold and training XP for your first three finishes each day (after that, a little XP). Your best time goes on the leaderboard. Medals: bronze under 65 seconds, silver under 55.5 seconds, gold under 51 seconds. Your first finish gives the Verdant Blanket, silver gives the Crimson Pennant, and gold gives a Mini Dragon.

Warping away, getting off or falling ends the run. Every mount has the same chance, because they all run at the same speed.

Titles

  • Wanderer of the Wilds: explore 20 places while riding (it also gives you a Forest Stag).
  • Master Rider: train a mount to level 30.
  • Stable Keeper: own all five mounts.

Wear a title from the Mounts window.
